Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Theatre Technical Production Manager, the Theatre Technician is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing the maintenance and operation of the performance-related technical equipment within the Dramatic Arts Department. The incumbent also acts as a technical resource expert for groups using the performance space, and provides guidance and support to Student Stagehands. This position will be 9 months/year - December through August, with the possibility of a partial contract from June through August 2018.
As the Theatre Technician, you will:
• Participate in set-up and strike of stage, lighting, sound, seating layout changes in the performance spaces, ensuring all equipment and spaces are in place for the commencement of performances, rehearsals and other events.
• Maintain the general upkeep of the backstage areas, including storage areas, in collaboration with the production team, ensuring all items are kept clean, tidy and in order at all times.
• Serve as a technical resource expert for groups using the performance spaces; coordinate with the representative using the space to determine technical requirements and provide technical support and assistance.
• Monitor the condition of equipment; troubleshoot and resolve problems with production equipment.
• Manage the lending/renting of the technical elements within the department, and to external users, including coordinating the delivery and tracking the items rented to ensure safe and on-time return.
• Report any accidents/incidents to the Production Manager.
• Maintain at all times a safe and secure working environment and ensure all health and safety policies are adhered to in relation to performance spaces, technical equipment and internal/external users.
• Prepare and equip teaching spaces for regular classes; provide basic furniture and acting equipment/supplies to instructors, as required.
• Inform instructors and students on available resources and appropriate access to storage, equipment and materials.
• Participate in set-up and strike for directing projects and class outcomes as required in collaboration with instructors and students, as required.
• Provide feedback and recommendations in evaluating the course projects with a production outcome, as required.
• Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all technical assets including consumables and theater production equipment; ensure all equipment are appropriately stored and controlled; coordinate the repair and replacement of equipment.
• Work with the Production Manager to ensure the Health and Safety policies are remained up-to-date, relevant and legally compliant.
• Maintain a variety of files and records, including manuals for technical equipment and H&S policies and procedures.
• Act as a main technical contact to liaise with staff, faculty members, contractors and supplies; build and maintain and strong working relationship to facilitate a smooth operation of the DART activities.
• Provide guidance and directions to Student Stagehands in order to serve a range of departmental activities required by the Production Manager.

Qualifications / Required Skills

What you Need to Succeed
• College Diploma in Technical Theatre, Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 2+ years in production departments of professional theatres.
• Demonstrated knowledge of all areas of theatrical production in diverse theatre organization models.
• Strong working knowledge of operational characteristics and techniques used in the theater production sound and lighting equipment.
• Excellent grasp of stage lighting, sound, design, and technical/electrical requirements, including knowledge of basic electricity and of lighting and audio control systems.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret blue prints and technical drawings.
• Strong understanding of Occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.
• Basic computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, and internet search engines.
• Demonstrated knowledge of basic structural integrity pertaining to materials commonly used in the industry, including rigging and set assembly.
• Commitment to the art of the theatre.
• Ability to collaborate to achieve the creative vision of director/designer/team.
• Excellent oral and written communication.
• Flexibility, adaptability, and good collaboration skills to work with faculty, staff, artists, students, and contractors.
• A high level of professionalism to interact effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines.
• Ability to work within a variety of production processes.
• Ability to work creatively with limited physical space, challenging schedules, and tight design delivery times.
• Ability to respond quickly to meet client needs and resolve problems.
• Typical shop construction and storage environments. Typical backstage environment, work in darkness with time pressures.
• Irregular and long hours are required to meet production deadlines, including many weekend and evening hours.
Preferred or Asset Skills:
• Membership at CITT, USITT or similar organization;
• Experience in an academic environment.
