Job Description / Duties

JOB SPECIFICATION:
The Facility Services Department is seeking a full time Technical Services Manager who is a big picture thinker, a team builder, proactive, results-driven, and a great resource for internal and external clients. This position is responsible for the technical operations of the theatres and other presentation spaces in the Living Arts Centre, and provides leadership and direction to the Technical Services team. The ideal candidate exemplifies exceptional technical production expertise and customer servicing for all presentations and productions at the Centre.

Qualifications / Required Skills

A minimum of 7 years technical, production and supervisory experience in a large size (800 + seats) theatre environment supported by related post-secondary education. Key skills required are solid people management and technical production knowledge of performing arts venue operations including lighting, sound, and sets; excellent organizational, interpersonal and customer service skills; and the ability to work both independently and as an effective team member. The successful candidate will have a “can do” attitude, must work well under pressure, is detail and deadline driven, has exceptional people and negotiation skills, and is constantly learning in order to speak knowledgeably about our products and services. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Filemaker Pro, and AutoCAD is essential. Strong understanding of the Ontario Ministry of Labour Guidelines, Fire Code Regulations and WHMS are required. Certifications in First Aid and Joint Health & Safety Committee is an asset.

Reporting to the Director, Facility Services, the successful candidate will:

Management & Administration
 Oversee the following direct reports – Technical Services Coordinator and Facility Services Technician by providing direction, hiring, training, supporting, evaluating and when required disciplinary action
 Manage a Labour Services contract with Nasco Staffing Solutions working alongside the management contacts and overseeing the supervision of supplied crew members
 Maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the theatre and monitor the condition of equipment
 Prepare departmental budgets and 10 year rolling capital plan for the theatres
 Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with sales and rental suppliers and service providers ensuring competitive quotes and exemplary support
 Maintain an active industry network to support staff, arts community and clients
 Serve as a Management Representative on the internal JHSC and participate in monthly inspections

Client Services
 For all assigned shows and events (approximately 40%), communicate with incoming groups to determine their tech requirements
 Coordinate and communicate event information both internally and externally as needed
 Review and execute contracts and technical riders
 Conduct site visits with incoming events and shows
 Book and schedule crew requirements through Nasco Staffing Solutions; approve event time sheets
 Generate accurate production estimates for all assigned shows (and oversee production estimates generated by reports) including LAC presented/produced performances, rental shows and corporate events in the theatres
 Produce production billing information and show reports for all theatre events in a timely manner

On site show coverage and supervision
 Perform on-duty Technical Director responsibilities for performances and events at the Centre
 Provide orientation for clients regarding safety policies and procedures of the space including evacuation process
 Be present in the building in a supervisory capacity from the start of the labour call to the time the client and/or crew are finished
 Liaise with artists, client, crew, front of house staff and facilities staff to run the event
 Supervise NASCO crew and provide direction during the setup, event and strike
 Respond as needed to emergency situations and ensure compliance with all policies, procedures and safety regulations
 Provide basic stage management assistance to clients if needed
 Assist with A.V. requests throughout the Centre, as required
 Serve as Building Representative in absence of Senior Management
 Other duties as required

This is a full time position requiring the successful candidate to work flexible schedule days, weekends and Statutory Holidays.
