Reporting to the General Manager, The Technical Director is responsible for all theatrical operating systems, stage crew deployment, and efficient operation of all on stage performances. (S)he will be responsible for liaising with all rental clients and touring artists to ascertain technical needs in advance, preparing said technical specifications and executing the performance requirements.
Acting as a member of the senior management team, (s)he will interact with each member of the team and will contribute to the future planning exercises of the CCTA including annual operating and capital budgets.
(S)he will develop a pool of local stagehands and ensure that they are knowledgeable and proficient in operating the Capitol’s on stage equipment including lights, sound and rigging and schedule all calls in the most time and cost effective manner possible. (S)he will maintain a comprehensive inventory of all permanent equipment and disposable supplies. (S)he will ensure that all equipment is in working condition by performing regular maintenance procedures as required.
The Technical Director will also ensure a safe working environment by developing health and safety standards and protocols for the stage and backstage environment that are in compliance with the Ontario labour standards for our industry.
The successful applicant will have at least five years experience working in a theatrical technical capacity. Experience working in a touring house situation will be extremely beneficial as well as experience working with volunteers and community based organizations.
The Technical Director is expected to act in a hands on operational capacity as required. Accordingly, a working knowledge in all areas, including sound reproduction, lighting and stage carpentry including rigging will be required.
The position is considered permanent full time.

The Chatham Capitol Theatre is poised to become the newest entertainment venue in south western Ontario. Dating from 1930, the building is a loving reconstruction of a former cinema into a state-of-the-art 1200 live performing arts centre that will become a “must play” on the tours of Canadian and international touring artists. Additionally, the Capitol will be home to several local performing organizations, schools and corporations.
Reconstruction of the Capitol is expected to be completed in May with a grand re-opening planned for September and an inaugural performance season to follow.
