Job Description / Duties

THE ROLE
Ballet BC is looking for an experienced, team oriented professional to assume the role of Stage Carpenter at the beginning of the 2025-26 season. Reporting to the Director of Production, the Stage Carpenter is responsible for the coordination and implementation of staging elements of the company’s programming and touring in line with the Artistic Director’s vision, the company mandate and objectives.
• Prepares, oversees and implements the various stage elements of the Ballet BC repertoire
• Works collaboratively with the Director of Production, Stage Manager, Lighting Director, Production Electrician and other production staff
• Fosters communication and positive relationships with the local, national and international Production personnel with which Ballet BC engages

Qualifications / Required Skills

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Attend all scheduled production meetings and critical studio runs as required
• Staging logistics – develop and plot staging and rigging plans for the productions based on the program order and technical requirements for each production and production on tour
• Supervise and direct running crew on stage during all rehearsals and performances
• Coordinate and execute intermission change over in collaboration with Ballet BC crew, and local labour
• Work with the Director of Production in preparation for touring, venue review, production presentation adjustments, inventory and logistics preparation and production staffing review
• Communicate with touring venues, regarding staging and set up of the program, to ensure the program’s integrity within the parameters set forth in the venue rider
• Scenic construction – construct scenery within their capacity, or supervise construction of scenic and prop elements for new creations
• Prepare construction drawing for vendors or crew engaged to fabricate scenery
• To ensure that the warehouse, props and set pieces are inventoried, organized and maintained to a high standard
• Maintain budget expectations for Ballet BC productions
• To assist with the moving, load-in, construction, repair and tear-down of sets and props during production periods, or as may be required in studio or other rehearsal venues
• Maintain a clean, safe and secure working area at all times
• To oversee all truck loading, unloading, shipping and receiving at the warehouse and Venues in which Ballet BC is performing
• As required, prepare production paperwork that will be necessary for the house crew
• Complete final as is technical documentation of productions for the Ballet BC production archive
• Provides support back stage for dancers during productions

Additional Information

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

• Under graduate degree, or equivalent training from an institution specializing in stagecraft Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in the field as a Stage/scenic Carpenter or in a supervisory capacity
• Competency in all aspects of current stage practice
• Understand and interpret stage plans, lighting plans and construction drawings
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team effectively, with varied personalities, and many work styles
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable within changing environments and overlapping priorities
• Critical and logical thinking, analysis and reasoning
• Excellent written skills with accuracy and attention to detail
• Strong verbal communication
• Class 5 driver’s License
• Valid Passport

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Familiar with labour collective agreements
• Forklift License
• Microsoft office proficiency, with an emphasis on Excel
• Proficient with Vectorworks or AutoCAD
• Construction drawing and drafting experience is an asset
• Additional industry recognized certifications (fire arms, pyro, rigging or electrical)

Salary: $68,000 - $71,000 annual contract salary
