Job Description / Duties

*Schedules and supervises House Crew and IATSE Local 58 and 822 members sent to work at the Centre.

*Monitors daily the production activities and work schedules of the Centre, including load-ins, performances, corporate events, load outs, and other production activities.

*Liaises with clients and internal departments to ensure smooth and professional performance and event management.

*Provides timely, clear, and concise work calls to the business agents of Locals 58 and 822.

*Resolves in a timely manner production and production personnel issues as they arise and to the mutual satisfaction on the Centre and/or its clients; briefs Programming and Corporate Sales as needed; and escalates serious unresolved issues to the Senior Manager, Production and/or to Programming or Corporate Sales as applicable.

*Prepares cost effective and thoughtful performance and event estimates for Programming and Corporate Sales for performances and events at the Centre in a timely manner.

*Monitors individual show and/or event budgets and ensures that Programming and Corporate Sales are appraised as early as possible of unexpected significant cost overages.

*Ensures, with all IATSE department heads, that time sheets are complete and accurate for hours worked and crew numbers.

*Creates timely production and stage labour expense reports as part of the Settlement with client for productions and events.

*Fully utilizes the Centre’s event management software (EBMS) to provide the Centre with performance, event, maintenance, and other information where appropriate for internal organizational and communication purposes.

*Attends weekly Operations meeting and Programming and Corporate Sales meetings as required. Meets with the Centre’s prospective and existing clients as well as clients representing Toronto’s diversity to ensure a high quality of service to all user groups.

*Supports “Sony Centre Presents” in venues outside of the Sony Centre as required.

*Takes on special projects as assigned.

Qualifications / Required Skills

*Minimum of 5 years experience in theatre and production management with experience in budgeting and financial accountability.

*Minimum of 3 years experience in a similar position in a rental and/or presenting venue.

*Experience with a wide range of theatrical activities such as dance, concerts, musicals, headliners, world music, etc.

*Experience with corporate events is an asset.

*Experience with supervision in a unionized environment.

*Strong organizational, planning, and leadership skills to coordinate conflicting deadlines and interruptions.

*Knowledge of current technical systems and practices used in the live performance industry.

*Interpersonal, team building, and collaborative skills.

*Effective oral and written communication skills.

*Practical knowledge of employment, labour, and occupational health and safety laws.

*Proficiency in Word, Excel, and CAD software (AutoCAD preferred).

*Ability to work variable and often long hours of work including nights and weekends.

*Must have a personality which allows for the consistent ability to deal with a wide range of temperaments.

*Ability to stand and walk freely and quickly.

Additional Information

This is a ten month maternity leave placement running from September 6, 2016 to June 2017, with the possibility of an extension. The position reports to the Senior Manager, Production. The Production Manager is responsible for the production and technical elements of the Centre’s activities throughout the facility including those taking place on the stage, in the lobbies, and exterior spaces. The position schedules and supervises the Centre’s full time and part-time production personnel who are members of IATSE Local 58 and Local 822.

The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, with a capacity of 3,191 seats, is the largest proscenium theatre in Canada. Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, the Centre programs artists to provide entertainment for the diversity of population that makes up this international city.

Seasons are programmed through a combination of Sony Centre presentations, co-presentations with local promoters from different communities, and of rentals. The season includes music, dance, comedy, musical theatre, children’s theatre, circus, and a broad variety of popular entertainment. It is usual for artists from North America, Europe, Asia, and South Asia to be represented in each season. Some presentations may be entirely in the language of origin.

The Centre operates its own box office and works with Ticketmaster Canada Ltd. for its internet, telephone, and outlet sales. The Centre is recognized throughout Canada as an industry leader in both customer and client service. In addition to servicing promoters, client service includes the organization and execution of social and corporate events which augment the Centre’s annual activity.

Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, the Centre is owned by the City of Toronto and governed by an arm’s length Board of Directors.

The City of Toronto has mandated the merger of the three City owned theatres (Sony Centre, St Lawrence Centre and Toronto Centre for the Arts, collectively Civic Theatres Toronto (CTT)). The effect of the merger on this role is unknown at this time, but the Sony Centre reserves the right to modify the above job description provided sufficient notice is provided. A compensation review will be done in conjunction with any significant changes in tasks made, if warranted
