Job Description / Duties


Reporting to the Senior Manager of Cultural Services at the Town of Oakville, the Manager of the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts is charged with establishing the long-term strategic direction for, and management of the Centre with the goal of optimizing community participation and revenue generation.

Responsibilities include fund-raising, budget development, strategic planning, general administration, revenue generation, and community liaison, and overseeing staff working in such areas as marketing, membership and sponsorship sales, programming, public relations, box office, front of house, technical and artistic operations, and building maintenance..

Qualifications / Required Skills

The ideal candidate will have senior experience in managing a performing arts venue with a university degree in arts and/or business management or equivalent experience in facility management and administration. Experience in municipal government cultural policy development and a strong track record in working with community groups would be helpful.

The new Manager should be a strategic thinker who can innovate through analysis and ideas, a person with excellent financial and managerial skills and a demonstrated leadership in fund-raising. Other necessary characteristics include experience in human resource management, knowledge of ancillary facility businesses such as catering, ticketing, and corporate rentals, and excellent oral and written communication skills.

The Manager represents the Centre to the public, the media and the performing arts industry-at- large through leadership and participation in community activities. He/she must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people, mobilizing and engaging many stakeholders with diplomacy and tact.

Since its opening in 1977, the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts has been a focal point for the cultural life of the Town of Oakville. It is a Town-owned, Town-funded, professionally staffed facility that exists to serve the performing arts needs of the residents of Oakville.

Designed by the Thom Partnership, the Oakville Centre has an intimate main stage seating 485 and a flexible studio theatre space accommodating 120. Located in historic downtown Oakville, and adjacent to the Oakville Public Library, it is a division of the Recreation and Culture Department of the Town of Oakville.
The Oakville Centre is home to three theatre companies, The Oakville Players, Burl-Oak Theatre Group, and West End Studio Theatre; the Oakville Symphony Orchestra, and many other community partners, representing sixty per cent of the annual bookings. In addition, the Oakville Centre presents Family, Concert, Comedy, Classical & World Artists, and Dance and Drama series, school programming, outreach activities, and After Show Artist Chats. . Annually the Centre has up to 260 performances of music, variety, comedy, drama, and family entertainment. 

The Centre has an annual budget of approximately $2.5 million and a full-time staff complement of 10, as well as a part-time staff of 27 to 32, and an active volunteer group. It is funded through a tax levy, as well as earned and contributed revenues (sponsorships and memberships).
