Job Description / Duties

Head Scenic Carpenter - Duties include but not limited to:
• Is responsible for the building of sets and stage elements.
• Works with the Design Coordinator and Production Director to build scenic design elements.
• Oversees completion of all scenic design elements for the production, manages builders in all areas, including wood, metal, paint, drapes and some stone working.
• Assists the Production Director in costing, budgeting and scheduling the project.
• Expedites projects within scheduled deadlines and Reports to the Production Director on a regular basis as to the status of the project budget and schedule.
• Supervise and maintain the workshop and set carpenters
• Keep the site as safe and clean, while helping improve the areas that weather and time may damage.
• Maintains the highest standards of production quality.
• Other duties as assigned by Production Director for the smooth operation of the set department.

Set Carpenter- Duties include but not limited to:
• Report directly to the Head Scenic Carpenter and the production Director.
• Build set pieces, including some standard elements, flats, platforms and columns—as well as pieces of the stage and projects to improve the site
• Thorough knowledge of structural and mechanical construction for the stage and film industries, both materials and techniques in scenic fabrication, including wood working, welding, rigging, painting and some Landscaping.
• Working mainly with woods and metals but also fabrics, stone and Dirt. They use various construction techniques that include woodworking, metalworking, welding, plus others. techniques.
• Maintain functionality and cleanliness within the workshop, about site and on set.
• Keep the site safe and clean, while helping improve the areas that weather and time may damage.
• Work with the Design Coordinator and Production Director and to build design elements.
• Maintain current set and site buildings
• Other duties as may be required for the smooth operation of the set department.
• The role may involve significant manual labor and can be physically demanding.
• They must be aware of the requirements of the health and safety legislation and procedures relevant to their role and be responsible for expressing any safety concerns that are observed and assisting to rectify them.
• Other duties as necessary for production under the direction of the Head Scenic Carpenter or the Production Director.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Thorough knowledge of structural and mechanical construction for the stage and film industries, both materials and techniques in scenic fabrication, including wood working, welding, rigging, painting and some Landscaping.
• Knowledge of various Computer Aided Drafting platforms.
• High functioning ability to read and interpret AutoCad and other technical drawings.
• Good working computer skills including Microsoft Office, email and internet research.
• Strong personnel, scheduling and people management skills
• Some knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems
• Strong knowledge of current health and safety standards, the implementation of same.
• The ability to ensure that workers are safe and operating in accordance with Company policies, health and safety guidelines and regulations.
• Solid organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal skills, integrity, high energy, creativity, a collaborative spirit and the sensitivity needed to work effectively in a diverse environment of artists, artisans and creative teams.
• A passion for the arts and the desire to be part of a vibrant creative company.
