Job Description / Duties

The Position

The Head Scenic Carpenter is a permanent position. The Grand Theatre’s carpenters work under the jurisdiction of IATSE Local 105. The Grand Theatre’s shop is generally in operation from August – April with a summer shut down.

The Head Scenic Carpenter is responsible to the Production Manager of the Grand Theatre.
He/she supervises two permanent carpenters as well as any extra carpenters hired on a show-by-show basis and is a builder on all productions. He/she is responsible for the construction of all Mainstage sets within the limitations of schedule, skills and budgets. In consultation with the Production Manager and/or Technical Director, he/she is responsible for reading and costing construction drawings, ordering materials and ensuring that an adequate inventory is maintained. He/she ensures that all equipment in the Carpentry Shop is maintained and safe. He/she collaborates with designers, directors and all production departments in realizing the sets. He/she collaborates with the Head Scenic Artist on materials and scheduling. He/she is responsible for the set up of all sets onstage in a safe and efficient manner.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The Candidate

The successful candidate will have five or more years of professional work experience in a shop/theatre environment preferably with supervisory experience. The candidate will have a deep knowledge of theatrical building practices in wood and metal, will be experienced with moving scenery, both flown and motorized, will have a working knowledge of traditional materials and be willing to research and use new materials. The candidate will have crew management experience. The candidate will be a problem solver, creative thinker and will have the ability to work in a team environment.
