Job Description / Duties

Call for Production Stage Managers, Stage Managers, and Assistant Stage Managers

In an effort to heighten awareness of the opportunities available and to broaden the reach of our recruitment efforts, we are posting multiple contract positions for Production Stage Managers, Stage Managers, and Assistant Stage Managers for our 2021 season. These positions report to the Director of Production or designate and are part of the Production team.

Since the season is yet to be publicly announced, we are listing approximate date ranges to reflect the contract length for each production. This schedule is subject to change as public health information and restrictions evolve. There will be events where a member of the Stage Management department is required to attend prior to their official contract start date (TBD virtual and/or on location). More details will be provided to candidates who are selected for interviews.

Contract Option #1 – Production Stage Manager (2 contracts)
• Responsible for overseeing the operation of the Stage Management department, the actors, and related spaces and events for two separate outdoor venues
• Contract length: on or about Monday, May 10 to Sunday, September 26 (subject to change)

Contract Option #2 – Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager (2 contracts)
• A Shakespeare play (approximately 90-105 minutes)
• Contract length: on or about Tuesday, May 18 to Sunday, July 25 (subject to change)

Contract Option #3 – Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager (2 contracts)
• A contemporary play (approximately 90-105 minutes)
• Contract length: on or about Tuesday, May 18 to Sunday, July 25 (subject to change)

Contract Option #4 – Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager (2 contracts)
• An Indigenous play (approximately 90-105 minutes)
• Contract length: on or about Tuesday, June 8 to Sunday, August 15 (subject to change)

• A play with music (approximately 90-105 minutes)

• A 90-minute concert
• Contract length: on or about Friday, June 4 to Sunday, July 11 (subject to change)

Contract Option #9 – Stage Manager (1 contract)
• A 90-minute concert
• Contract length: on or about Thursday, June 24 to Saturday, July 31 (subject to change)

Contract Option #10 – Stage Manager (1 contract)
• A 90-minute concert
• Contract length: on or about Friday, July 9 to Sunday, August 15 (subject to change)

Contract Option #11 – Stage Manager (1 contract)
• A 90-minute concert
• Contract length: on or about Friday, July 30 to Sunday, September 5 (subject to change)

Contract Option #12 – Stage Manager (1 contract)
• A 90-minute concert
• Contract length: on or about Friday, August 20 to Sunday, September 26 (subject to change)

Responsibilities:
• Production Stage Manager responsibilities include but are not limited to:
o Coordinating rehearsal calls, fittings, classes, interviews, and training
o Communicate information from rehearsals to administration, production, and other relevant staff involved
o Delegate duties within departments
o Oversee issues or concerns of actors and stage management
o Adhere to, implement, and enforce the Stratford Festival’s Health & Safety Commitment and Procedures, and ensure that safe work practices and policies are supported and enforced within the reporting structure
• Stage Manager responsibilities include but are not limited to:
o Overseeing a production during the rehearsal period and during performances
o Maintain and assemble prompt scripts including detailed notes on blocking
o Maintain artistic and technical intentions of the director, producer, and designers after opening
o Coordinate and communicate with heads of all other departments
o Maintain records as necessary to advise the theatre and Equity on matters of company discipline, overtime, meal breaks, working environment, health and safety
o Adhere to, implement, and enforce the Stratford Festival’s Health & Safety Commitment and Procedures, and ensure that safe work practices and policies are supported and enforced within the reporting structure
• Assistant Stage Manager responsibilities include but are not limited to:
o Organizing a production during the rehearsal period and backstage during performances
o Prepare and maintain detailed notes and lists on props, costumes, scene timings, costume changes, actor entrances/exits, and scene changes
o Coordinate and liaise all aspects of a production by communicating information to all departments involved on a daily basis
o Oversee an efficient backstage area during a production by paging scenes and accounting for props and costumes
o Adhere to, implement, and enforce the Stratford Festival’s Health & Safety Commitment and Procedures, and ensure that safe work practices and policies are supported and enforced within the reporting structure

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications:
• Qualified Canadian Actors’ Equity Association Stage Manager
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong organizational skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Experience working in outdoor venues is an asset, but not a requirement

Salary: Fee Range: As per the fees in the Stratford Festival Addendum to the CTA

Starting hourly rates are:

Production Stage Managers (PSM) - $40.22
Stage Managers (SM) - $35.10
Assistant Stage Managers (ASM) - $29.26
