Job Description / Duties

The Arts Club Theatre is currently accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Regular Assistant Stage / Fit-up Carpenter. This position is part-time under an IATSE agreement and will work under the supervision of the Technical Director of the Production Shop in pre-production and the Technical Directors for the Arts Club venues on installs. Hours of employment will be as required.

Duties will include, but not limited to; 

  • Set construction in scene shop
  • Assist with set fit up and tear down in the production shop
  • Supervise and assist with set fit up and strike in different Arts Club venues and attend to notes as required
  • Supervise and assist with truck loading/ unloading
  • Advise and assist with on-going stage & scenery maintenance 
<div>Preference may be given to persons holding additional certificates for one, or all of the following; Supervisor Safety, WHMIS, 1st Aid, a valid B.C. driver’s license, Pyrotechnic and/or Firearms certificate

Mandatory requirement;
At least 2 years of experience as a stage carpenter and fly man
Able to work at heights / climb ladders
Valid BC Driver’s License, able to drive a 5 ton truck

The Assistant Stage Carpenter will have excellent communication skills and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Must be flexible in outlook and approach to the position and be diplomatic in dealing with crews, cast, stage managers and all other staff.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Specific skills will include, but not be limited to;
Broad knowledge of theatrical procedures, tools and products
Thorough knowledge of all aspects of scenic construction
Able to read and understand designer blue prints
Proficient working knowledge of counter weighted fly systems and set up, rigging and strike of scenery
Proven ability to operate and maintain motorized stage equipment and scenery.
Experience driving and packing a 5 ton truck, proven ability to supervise, train, and support assigned union staff.
Ability to establish priorities, report on projects and achieve deadlines.
Take direction and work under time constraints with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated organization and problem solving skills.
