Job Description / Duties

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Theatre Design and Production Department seeks an experienced and accomplished full-time tenure-track assistant professor of Lighting Design and Technology, focusing on technology, to serve as an instructor and head of the BFA Lighting Design & Technology program

Responsibilities: Faculty duties include teaching courses for MFA/BFA programs in introductory-level Lighting Design and advanced-level Lighting Technology. This position will also serve as the head of the BFA in Lighting program and will be the lead faculty in advising and mentoring undergraduate lighting students. The faculty member shall serve as one of two resident lighting design advisors for the division productions in theatre, musical theatre, opera, dance (classical and modern) and other live entertainment events, designing as needed. The faculty member will share mentoring of the MFA/BFA candidate designers for all student designed productions. The faculty member will assist in placing and coordinating student internships and outside work. The faculty member will play a major role in the recruitment of both MFA and BFA students and work with the MFA Lighting Design Faculty to continually expand industry connections, knowledge, guest artist programs, and professional level training. This position is expected to coordinate with the MFA faculty and Resident Master Electrician about the general operation of the lighting program including curriculum development, equipment inventory, and coordination and supervision of student workers. All faculty are expected to provide service to the college and university by membership on committees. In addition, the faculty member will be required to attend regular departmental meetings regarding scheduling, logistics and artistic planning.

Recruiting and annual student showcases will necessitate air travel within the US.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must hold a terminal degree in lighting design or equivalent professional experience. Candidates must have a minimum of three years of professional lighting design/technology experience as well as a minimum of two years of experience teaching at the university level. Essential to the position is a thorough understanding of current lighting technology.

Additional Qualifications: Candidates should be proven artist/teachers with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be willing to become part of a highly collaborative and experienced faculty. The ideal candidate should have five years of teaching experience at a university level and design experience in a wide range of lighting disciplines (e.g. Drama, Musical Theatre, Opera, Classical & Modern Dance, Arena/Concert, Architecture, Media and Projections). The candidate should have a comprehensive knowledge of lighting design topics which may include; the history of theatrical lighting design/technology, lighting design philosophies, hand and computer-aided drafting, photometrics, and cueing techniques for conventional and automated lighting. The candidate should also have extensive knowledge in lighting technology topics including; troubleshooting fixtures and lighting systems, power distribution, system design and lighting network installation. The candidate should also have a high-level working knowledge (and be able to instruct students) on programming of ETC, High End Systems, and grandMA lighting consoles. The candidate should be able to instruct students in Vectorworks (both in the general use of the program, and for Lighting Design in particular). The candidate should be able to create structured classes with projects that bring students through basic, core and advanced skills and concepts in lighting technology. The ideal candidate may also be able to instruct students in the use of projection/media software and technology (e.g. Isadora, Watchout, Disguise, touchdesigner, Resolume, Hippotizer, QLab, Catalyst) and the installation, use, and maintenance of projection/media equipment and systems.

Terms of Appointment: Tenure track appointment. Salary shall be commensurate with experience.
