 construction and renovation projects are complex and expensive. By their
  nature, they attract big firms looking to build their portfolio along w
 ith big promises that don’t necessarily align with available funding. 
 To make things even more difficult, when there are so many interested pa
 rties at the table, it’s not always clear to whom the project architec
 ts are responsible. Enter the Advocate Architect.\n\n“The role of the 
 Advocate Architect is to provide support for the Owner and user-stakehol
 ders within a complex project when there is no direct relationship betwe
 en the Owner and the Consulting Architect.” Canadian Handbook of Pract
 ice, Appendix D\n\nThe Advocate Architect often reports directly to the 
 organization’s CEO/Executive Director and Board Chair and works collab
 oratively with the organization’s Steering Committee – which can be 
 a combination of senior staff and board volunteers. This presentation wi
 ll guide participants through the usual stages of a construction project
  from pre-design, conceptual design, detail design to construction with 
 particular attention to project pitfalls and opportunities for the advoc
 ate architect to provide substantial value to your new construction or r
 enovation project. Examples will be illustrated through the Royal Winnip
 eg Ballet New Student Dormitory and the Gas Station Arts Centre Feasibil

 l design including contract drawings and specifications, as well as cons
 truction phase services.\n\n* Participants will be introduced to suggest
 ed ways to organize their board and staff to best support their construc
 tion project.\n\n* Participants will be introduced to typical terminolog
 y for a design project including the typical scope for an architect and
