As Claire's primary research has largely been focussed on teaching technical theatre in an online or distance education setting, she has some wonderful insights that will help you run your classes more smoothly and help make your delivery more engaging to your students.

About the presenter
Claire Carolan PhD has been a scenographer in Western Canada since 1992 and an educator since 1995, and continues to design and teach in the Lower Mainland. Unable to decide on a favourite department, Claire works most often in lighting and set design, scenic art and properties. She has taught at the college level for the Douglas College Stagecraft program and the Mount Royal College Department of Theatre and Speech. Claire was the properties master at the University of Calgary from 2004-2010. She currently teaches a wide range of education, performance, history, and technical courses at Simon Fraser University and the University of the Fraser Valley. She has a keen interest in theatre education and defended her interdisciplinary doctoral dissertation, Undergraduate Lighting Design Curriculum and Pedagogy in Canada, at the University of Victoria in 2019. In 2015 she launched the Tri-University Colloquium for Theatre and Performance Research which has presented over 80 papers and performances at its annual conference and is presently moving to a digital journal format. Her research practice is largely focused on teaching technical theatre in an online or distance education setting. Claire’s work has been published in TRiC/RTAC: Theatre Research in Canada, Canadian Theatre Review, Musicological Explorations, and Blue Pages: The Society of British Theatre Designers.
